It's all about the 'maters

This post is devoted to our wonderful tomatoes (or as they are called around here 'maters) ...

Part One: Our Big Boy
We planted many many tomatoes in our garden this year. Brent, Pat and myself all like the occasional tomato--Gary LOVES them. He says he will be eating them out of the garden like Brent and Mallory eat the peas and he will be having them on toast for lunch...so 33 plants later I think we are set. We have a big variety of plants as well, cherry, early girl, best boy...and one BIG and BEEFY. Now this plant has been taking its sweet time in growing. At first we thought he was just preparing his roots for those BIG tomatoes that the label so clearly stated that he'd be growing...the past few weeks have not been the greatest for our big boy. He was looking pretty sparse. He stands about a foot and a half tall (while all the other plants are soaring at almost 3 feet...) His leaves are turning yellow, his stalk looking dried out.

Next to the white arrow is our teeny tiny Big Boy...you can barley see the the thin stalk and little bush of leaves on top

When we got back from the cabin on Sunday we headed out to the garden. Gary yelled something along the lines of it's "blog worthy!"

I am sure you know where this is headed....

Big Boy has a MATER!

As you can see he isn't out of the woods--a long shot at that. Who knows if the tomato will even mature--and if it does who knows if this will be our only "Big and Beefy". I know you are all waiting with bated breath for any further updates on our Big Boy....

Part Two: Mallory tries a 'mater

I promise that I will not bore you with every single new veggie harvest--but this one is classic following the peas from last week. Mallory headed down to the garden with Grandpa to pick a tomato. He talked all about how tomatoes aren't ripe until they are red. He showed Mallory where our prized one red cherry tomato was and she plucked it off without any trouble.

In the house they went to clean the tomato before trying a bite. Mallory was so excited and kept saying "mmmmmm" (clearly she thought it was going to taste like the peas). She helped clean, took off the stem, and that sat in Grandpa's lap. She took the tomato and bit into it just like she would an apple....

BLECH.....I need a dwink of watur!
